They come from Mexico. They've been making music for over 30 years. Their lead singer, Alejandro (Alex) Lora, has a voice as gravelly and soulful as if he's been smoking cigarettes and drinking cold cervesas since he was weaned. EL TRI have sold millions of records in Mexico, and they ROCK!! Considered The Rolling Stones of Mexico, in terms of consistent sales and country-wide recognition, Alex Lora is loved and held close to the heart of the Mexico's rock and roll population, many of whom are very poor and come from the streets. El Tri's rare appearances in America become celebrations of Mexican independence, as thousands of mexicanos converge to listen and dance and celebrate la vida y las musica.

I had the privilege of working with El Tri back in my corporate days at WEA Int'l. One day I found a tape hidden away in stacks of crap at WEA, gave it a listen, and I was transformed (I cover El Tri in the very first TEST PRESS). Great guitar music, and one of the best harmonica players en todo el mundo, Senor Rafael Salgado..
I found out that El Tri had been around for years and years and were considered icons in Mexico. I became a big fan, and when El Tri finally played in New York in 1988, I helped push the word (Alex Lora coined my nickname "el Jéfe" after he heard I was his number one fan in the States). I got in trouble at WEA after I pitched El Tri to the Latin Notas columnist in Billboard, and he quoted me in a big story on the band. My boss considered me a reckless publicist and gave me shit because I didn't pitch Luis Miguel instead.
